FAQ

  • What is a copper still and how does it work?
A copper still is a type of distillation apparatus used to produce distilled beverages, such as whiskey, gin, and vodka. It consists of a pot or kettle, a condenser, and a receiver. The pot is filled with a fermented liquid, such as mash, and heated to boiling. The vapor that is produced rises up the neck of the still and is cooled and condensed by the condenser, resulting in a clear, concentrated liquid called the distillate. The distillate is collected in the receiver.
  • Why is copper used to make stills?
Copper is used to make stills because it is an excellent conductor of heat and has antimicrobial properties. When heated, copper can quickly transfer heat to the liquid inside the still, helping to efficiently distill the liquid. Copper also has the ability to kill bacteria and other microorganisms, which helps to produce a clean and pure distillate.
  • What kind of Solder do we use, is it lead free?

  • Are Copper Stills safe to use ?
Copper stills are generally considered safe to use as long as they are properly maintained. Copper is a relatively non-toxic material and has been used for centuries to make a variety of products, including cookware, pipes, and coins.
Additionally, it is important to follow all safety precautions when using a copper still, such as wearing protective gear, properly ventilating the area, and avoiding contact with hot surfaces. It is also a good idea to regularly inspect the still for any signs of wear or damage, and to repair or replace any damaged parts as needed.
  • How do I clean a copper still?
To clean a copper still, you should start by rinsing it thoroughly with warm water to remove any residual liquid or solids. Next, fill the still with a mixture of warm water and a mild, non-abrasive cleaning solution, such as baking soda or vinegar. Allow the solution to soak for a few hours, and then use a soft cloth or sponge to scrub the inside of the still. Rinse the still thoroughly with warm water to remove any cleaning solution, and then dry it thoroughly. You can also use a commercial copper cleaner if desired.
  • How do I maintain a copper still?
To maintain a copper still, you should clean it thoroughly after each use and dry it thoroughly to prevent the formation of water spots. You should also avoid using any harsh or abrasive cleaning products, as these can damage the surface of the copper. If the still develops a patina or tarnish over time, you can use a commercial copper cleaner or a mixture of lemon juice and salt to remove it. It is also a good idea to inspect the still regularly for any signs of wear or damage, and repair or replace any damaged parts as needed.
